Traditional paper coupons continue to dominate in terms of distribution despite data showing digital coupons driving exponential redemption relative to distribution volume.
Inmar Inc.’s Promotion Industry Analysis for H1 2016 finds that even as digital coupons are creating a 10x impact in redemption activity relative to share of overall distribution, traditional paper coupons (in the form of Free-standing Inserts or “FSIs”) continue to dominate the industry. FSIs comprised 90.6 percent of the coupons distributed in the first six months of the year while digital coupons (paperless load-to-card and print-at-home) accounted for just 0.6 percent – but garnered 6.7 percent of total …
For digital coupons, dollars circulated, estimated prints, and average face value each grew in the first half of 2016.
Average face value of digital coupons issued for Consumer Packaged Goods brands increased by 21.2% in the first half of 2016, compared to the same period last year, far outpacing the increase of 0.6% registered by print coupons.
According to new data from Kantar Media, while the face values of print coupons distributed through Free Standing Inserts, SmartSource Coupon Machines and Consumer Magazines was higher than that of digital coupons distributed through Network and Retailer websites, the gap is narrowing.

In a recent conference call sponsored by ACP I raised the question of manufacturer’s expectations for accuracy in receipt scanning. I heard one voice say 95%. Even though it’s only one voice I’ll take that as a consensus because while it sounds like a high hurdle when compared to traditional paper coupons (whisper number is 85%), it is a worthy goal. So to help reach that goal I’m going to outline some of ways we work to improve accuracy in the hope that our receipt scanning colleagues will do the same. And the end result will be better …

In a conversation with a friend and fellow marketer, we reminisced about the old days when an advertising campaign with traditional media — TV, newspaper and radio – could virtually guarantee success through awareness of your “new product” or “great value” to the consumer. After we wrapped up the “old days” discussion and moved on to today’s world, we pondered the ever-increasing value of data from both traditional and digital media.
The right insight can turn a good marketing campaign into a great campaign. Yet the sheer amount of data coming at you every …
Coupons are incentives to encourage the use of a particular brand. It creates a favorable value equation by temporarily making the price attractive. Once the purchase is made all the other brand attributes need to kick in so that the brand delivers on its promise creating a positive experience and value to the consumer. Hopefully, that positive experience moves the user up the loyalty value scale from purchase with incentive, to purchase at regular price, and from occasional user to loyal user.
The ACP continues to add value to members in particular, and the industry in general with our forums for …
